Bergen (NO) - Aarhus (DK)

23 July - 03 August 2019

Tall Ships Races 2019: Race 2. International Exchange for all nationalities age 15-25 years. Sail with the Morgenster from Norway to Denmark and help her win yet another Tall Ships Race! After boarding in Bergen you will have a safety briefing and enjoy the atmosphere of a maritime festival. You will depart in a Parade of Sail and make your way to Aarhus, striving to be the first ones on the finish line. You will work hand in hand with other trainees and crew to make it happen: setting the sails, steering, navigating, etc. Once in port, you can expect festive celebrations for the finale of this year’s Tall Ships Races. Open to Windseekers aged 15-25, ages 26-28 at request.

Programme Outline

Once again in 2019 the Tall Ships from all over the world will come together to compete in the 63rd annual Tall Ships Races. Race 2 will bring you across the North Sea, from Norway to Denmark. Prepare to leave the city of Bergen in a spectacular Parade of Sail, before embarking on an exciting race. After a few days on the open sea you will reach Aarhus where you will join your fellow trainees from other Ships in Crew Parade, Crew Party, friendly competitions and visiting other vessels.

As a Windseeker you will be a trainee on board of your vessel. Under the watchful eye of professional crew members you will be responsible for sailing the Ship from setting and trimming the sails, through looking out for other vessels, to navigating and steering. You will have day and night watches, and also some time to relax and enjoy the journey!

The International Exchange is a very special type of journey where connecting to people from other cultures is as important as sailing. Aside from doing everything to sail the Ship to the destination port, you will enjoy additional cultural activities such as national dinners, debates and games. While the professional Crew will ensure your journey will be safe, during International Exchanges there are also mentors on board who will organize your activities and help you adjust to life on board.

You will be divided into watches and work on the Ship in shifts of 4 hours on, 8 hours off. That means two watches per day: one in daytime and one in the night, as the Ship doesn’t stop sailing! Don’t worry, your sleep pattern will soon adjust. You will stand lookout, navigate, man the helm, on some Ships climb the masts (voluntarily), cook and clean – and you do it all as a team. By the time you reach the destination port you will be like a family. Warning: saying goodbye won’t be easy!

Ports

Bergen is the gateway to the Fjords of Norway and a well-established cruise port. It's an international city packed with history and tradition, a big city with small-town charm and atmosphere. Stroll around old streets and alleyways, and mingle with the crowds at the Fish Market. Saunter along the listed wooden buildings at Bryggen to the old fortress at Bergenhus, or call in at one of Bergen’s museums and galleries. The panoramic views of the city, the fjord and the ocean are breathtaking.

Aarhus is a port on the northeast coast of Jutland, Denmark. One of its main attractions is the open air museum Den Gamle By, where historical buildings from all over Denmark have been relocated. But the 13th century cathedral is also well worth a visit. Aarhus is a relaxed place with enough to see and do, and its city centre is a favourite with Tall Ship crews who visit the city regularly. West of the city you’ll find lakes and forests, perfect for a hike.
