Isafjordur (IS) - Isafjordur (IS)

24 June - 30 June 2016

Icelandvoyage – Glowing Meadows and Melting Glaciers (1) – This trip of a week will focus on the Isafjardadjup area. (and are easy to combine with a longer stay on the Island.) With its main attraction Hornstrandir National Park. The area was largely abandon in the second world war. But during summer some of the houses are still in use. The region has been preserved against grazing for several decades. Continuous growth reaches an altitude of no more than 300-400 metres. The most interesting points for bird watching are the bird cliffs, Hornbjarg, Hælavíkurbjarg and Riturinn, with their superabundance of birds. It is a great place to do day hikes and just take in the overwhelming sights! Open for all ages, minimum age 15 years.

Ports

Isafjordur (meaning ‘fjord of ice’) is a small port town in the northwest of Iceland. It is a major access point to the nature reserve on the Hornstrandir Peninsula, an uninhabited wilderness area to which ferries run weekly during summer. Despite its small population of 2600 people, the town has a relatively urban feel. It is considered a centre for alternative music and there’s even a hospital. Have a look around in the Maritime museum or go for a tour of the waterfalls and the nearby fjords.
