Skibladner II

The Ship

Skibladner II is a Danish gaff rig ketch, is run exclusively by volunteers. The old cargo room accommodates the crew serving as galley, mess, and quarters, so as to allow up to 19 people to live on board. There are fitted bunks in the dormitory, including 3 double-bunks (the others are single). There is no shower on board.
The Ship sails mostly in Danish waters, but participation in races and regattas (e.g. The Tall Ships Races) has brought them as far North as Stavanger (NO), South as Lisbon (PT), East as St. Petersburg (RU), and West as Dublin (IE).
The recent work replaced some of the oak wood in the aft end of the ship, leaving the bridge with a deck much more similar to the original one.

History

Skibladner II was built in 1897 in Odense, and had an impressive life as a cargo vessel. For 65 years she carried granite from Bornholm in the Baltic Sea (the only place in Denmark where cliffs are found) and cement from Ã…lborg in Northern Jutland, to the capital, Copenhagen.
In 1962, the FDF (a Danish youth organization based in the Church of Denmark), acquired the ship, and ever since it has been used as a sail training vessel for young people
